Gandhi

Gandhi

1982

Richard Attenborough's 1982 biopic of Mahatma Gandhi (played by Ben Kingsley) - the lawyer who became the famed leader of the Indian revolts against the British through his philosophy of non-violent protest.

In a British-occupied India, Gandhi starts his movement towards peaceful enlightenment for his people. Immersing himself in the life of a peasant, he grows a conscious understanding of what it’s like to be Indian, trading his Western clothing for a loincloth. Through years of nonviolent protest, Gandhi seeks a resolve to the meaningless bloodshed between India and Britain, with his country’s independence the ultimate goal.

Press Reviews

  • Chicago Sun-Times (Roger Ebert)

What is important about this film is not that it serves as a history lesson (although it does) but that, at a time when the threat of nuclear holocaust hangs ominously in the air, it reminds us that we are, after all, human, and thus capable of the most extraordinary and wonderful achievements, simply through the use of our imagination, our will, and our sense of right.
