Stuff

Part one of the climactic finale of the Harry Potter series (JK Rowling's last book, The Deathy Hallows, has been split in two for the movies). More

Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction – the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.

The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort…alive. Harry’s only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale – the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks. Now Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.

Joining the cast is Rhys Ifans (as Xenophilius Lovegood), Ciaran Hinds (as Aberforth Dumbledore) and Bill Nighy (as Rufus Scrimgeour). Hide

Andrew Hedley Flicks Writer

We are finally, kind of, at the end of the Potter series, and what distinguishes the penultimate episode from the first is just how much has changed. These are dark times indeed. There’s no visit to Hogwarts, nor any Enid Blyton-esque boarding school joviality; all has been overshadowed by a gloomy cloud of despair. More

As a disclaimer: this reviewer finds J.K. Rowling’s The Deathly Hallows novel to be a weaker entry, an ungainly conclusion to what began as light-hearted fun. Chapter after chapter passes without incident, a seemingly never-ending camping excursion across Blighty where the central trio sit around mulling over what to do next.

The film adaptation doesn’t really fix those issues. Part one is still the least interesting, the bit that continues the exposition from The Half-Blood Prince and teases us even further with the promise of an explosive finale that will finally, actually, literally conclude the series.

The good news is that a lack of momentum allows The Deathly Hallows: Part I to revel in atmospheric tension. This really is a more grown-up affair, and very scary, whether with the Dark Lord’s manipulation of his minions in Malfoy Manor, or in Bathilda Bagshot’s reptilian stare. Most frightening of all might be the sight of two lead characters in a naked embrace, pashing.

Director David Yates (Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince) continues to stretch the series. Alexandre Desplat’s brooding score shifts the tone, the acting is much stronger (Peter Mullan’s Death Eater Yaxley is awesome), and a clever animated section retelling the Tale of the Three Brothers is a creative touch.

But despite the strengths of this handsome, unsettling entry, a slavish devotion to the source material will alienate Potter newbies (although one might assume it doesn’t matter by now). The film’s final stretch waffles on about wands and wand makers, characters appear out of nowhere, a trip to Harry’s birthplace is bafflingly pointless, and then it just… ends. As is tradition for these films, it’s a good fifteen minutes too long.

Fans will likely forgive the slow pace and the lack of drive. What we all really want is Harry vs Voldemort and we’ve still got eight months to wait. Hide

Harry Potter is the best trilogy since Lord of the Rings. I only read the books because the movies got me hooked. The movies are the best released fantasy films ever made. HP5 should have been 2 movies as well. Anyway, JK Rowling is a genious for creating this story. Hollywood is majical in showing us this story. The Box Office will be proof, this is the greatest story ever told.
P.S To Genie, Avada Kedavra !!

Film is Awesome

Aaron Nobody (?)

Andrew Hedley, I disagree with parts of your review. It reads as though you have giving the film a low score just because you the film was split. It's only Part 1. Everyone needs to have that in their heads. Yes, the film ends somewhat abruptly (not that bad though I must say), but would you really not expect that from a film that is just part 1?

Anyway, I really enjoyed this entry. They finally managed to get the balance of humour and violence right this time. I was actually astounded how funny the film was while at the same time being easily the darkest film yet.

While the plot can be somewhat confusing to those who haven't read the book, it is produced in a subtle way that will have you understanding what is happening after you have left the cinema, and all should be explained in Part 2. Afterall, you shouldn't judge the plot of a 2-part film by only seeing one half...

Mourning the English language

Dan Nobody (?)

The comments on this page really make me sad for the future of the English language. The prolific "txt spk" is truly horrible, and I don't think there's a single comment with decent spelling or punctuation. Bah, the youth of today, etc.

Saw the movie at the weekend, pretty much agree with Flicks' review. The exposition could have been trimmed down, and the naked dancing was uncomfortable and unnecessary. The ending was... well, there was no ending, really. I'm looking forward to the final movie, hopefully our patience will be rewarded.

Brilliant

Ron Nobody (?)

Every actor has got better, especially the trio. David Yates (director) has improved, and Alexandre Desplat (composer) fits to the sinister theme. This film has the lowest budget but some of the old sets are re used, (250 million for HP7 Part 1&2, HP6 used 250m itself).
This is the darkest and best book to film adaptation yet out of the series. I feel the best scenes are the 7 Potters/Sky Battle, Ministry of Magic, Godric’s Hollow, Ron and the Locket, the Lovegood scene and then from the Malfoy Manor onwards.
The action scenes are perfect yet it can be long at times (for those who haven’t read the books) but that’s about it. ¾’s of the 1 Stars have been from genie, aren’t his literary techniques so adorable for a 7 year old Twilight lover...

Marlayna Nobody (?)

I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I have to admit that there were times in the book when I really wanted to skip ahead a few pages. I never found that in the movie. I loved every second of it. Daniel, Emma and Rupert are brilliant in their roles. The only thing that disappointed me was he fact that it ended. I wil be waiting impatiently for the next installment. But for now. Time to re-read the books.

Terrific, but incomplete

askar Nobody (?)

Getting HP out of Hogwarts has turned out to be a totally good thing. this movie is great, except it's not complete. It finishes in a logical place, but I really felt cheated by not getting the rest. Yes - I knew it was only half the story, and I know the whole series has been a continuing story - but somehow this left a feeling of frustration at the end. Even so the story travels too fast to take it all in (as with most of the movies) - the books are better.

I am the hugest Harry Potter fan, but even I was skeptical when I heard they were going to chop Deathly Hallows into two parts. I'm so in love with the Harry Potter films. These are the films that made me want to be a film maker! They are so beautiful, magical, emotional, colourful, fun and humorous. And from a film making point of view... I think the cinematography is AMAZING, so beautiful! And this in particular film was very interesting. I did miss Hogwarts a bit... But it was nice in the 'real world'. Kinda made the whole thing more real feeling I guess.
