Holy Motors 2012

Stuff

Surreal dream-like drama following Denis Levant’s character (sometimes called Alex, sometimes Monsieur Oscar) through a few hours and a number of lives as he travels to various appointments, each time transforming himself with disguises in a dressing room within his limousine. Holy Motors was one of the most talked-about films of the Cannes Film Festival 2012, drawing comparisons to the films of David Lynch (Mulholland Drive) and Gaspar Noé (Enter the Void).

Wow. This was awesome, leaving me in a strange state as I left the theatre, partly because Holy Motors evoked a number of different moods and memories as it wove its way through different film genres, and partly because its dream-world left my mind racing. More

While it definitely seems more about the journey than the destination, where the film ends up is in a place of delightful absurdity. Holy Motors may be all over the place but the whole enterprise hangs together – thanks largely to Denis Levant’s incredible chameleon-like lead performance. Hide
