You may kiss the bride...

The third installment in the Spanish horror movie franchise moves out of the apartment building setting of the first two films as the zombie virus breaks loose at a wedding. More

Running parallel to the first film in the series, [REC] 3: Genesis reveals that there is more to the mysterious 'infection' than originally thought. On what is meant to be their most special day, newlyweds Clara (Letica Dolera) and Koldo (Deigo Martin) find themselves surrounded by flesh hungry relatives.

Co-director of the of the first two [REC] films, Paco Plaza takes sole charge of directing duties and moves the horror outdoors and into the daylight, while his co-directing partner, Jaume Balagueró, will make his solo contribution with the upcoming [REC] Apocalypse. Hide

Acknowledging the once-novel found footage style of its terrifying predecessors, [REC] 3: Genesis begins with a fake out DVD menu before cutting to a 20 minute prologue in the form of handheld footage covering the wedding of its two leads, Clara (Leticia Dolera) and Koldo (Diego Martín). Director Paco Plaza manages to get in a few meta-gags about camcorder footage being 'unwatchable,' as well as some ominous business involving an uncle bitten by a stray dog, before the zombie mayhem erupts and the film switches to a traditionally filmed style. More

Unfortunately the change in format costs the film much of its gravitas, and the remaining hour plays out as something of a light-hearted comedy. While I admire the filmmakers wanting to switch things up a bit, I found myself completely uninvested in the supporting characters which made their deaths seem a bit trivial. There is some urgency to getting our estranged bride and groom back together, and the two leads are endearing enough (particularly Dolera and her expressive eyes), but the film feels pretty disposable, with Plaza shooting for something akin to early Peter Jackson (some great gore FX late in the piece are very welcome), but ending up on the wrong side of the silly/scary equation.

At 80 minutes [REC] 3: Genesis is a fun diversion, but too slight to take seriously. Let's hope the final instalment reinstates some depth to the franchise, and ends things on a suitably grim note. Hide

Hmmmmmmmmmm

Hmmmm basically my first thought after watching REC3, on the surface it displays itself as a fairly decent horror movie (i would have enjoyed it more if it wasnt a REC movie), with a somewhat weird comical twist which almost seemed to me like the movie wasnt taking itself seriously which i found off putting. As you dig deeper however things begin to come apart. This is a REC movie and it barely resembled one. I wasnt sure i moving away from the handheld cam was a right decision (even though it has been overused nowdays). But this is what makes the REC franchise so iconic as it effectively uses the handheld concept to create chaos and fear to the viewers. I almost felt none of this during the movie instead i just saw the typically horror conventions and camera work.
I also see they are moving away from handheld in REC4 as well lets hope they can get it right this time.
I will give them points for trying to change things up but the formula just didnt work for this movie.
I give it 3 stars for trying to do something different.

Zombie prequel distances itself from series with entertaining blend of silliness and scares. Full review.

Total Film (UK)

Taking a weird swerve into rom-zom-com, the third [REC] shaky-horror ends up pulled apart by its own genre mutations. Full review.

Easily the most fun I've had in cinemas in months. Full review.

Variety (USA)

Instead of frightening, the resulting gore and cartoonish violence are mostly just gleefully over-the-top. Full review.
