An Ending From The Start

Jordan Flicks Superstar (?)

"Shut Up And Play The Hits" is a before and after look into the final performance by the group LCD Soundsystem and the ramifications of frontman James Murphy's decision to end the music.

The documentary starts straight into the music, the atmosphere drawing you in and the crowd loving this moment they get to share with the band. Yet, over the top a bittersweet taste comes through as you realize that once the show is over, it stops.
It is here where the documentary fills in moments with cutaways of what Murphy deals with before and after the show. The interview about the decision, the final look at the gear that made the performance, it all culminating in a final scene resembling that of a family saying farewell to one another.

Vibrant, energetic, with that tinge of sadness hanging over it, this documentary provides a loving final look at a band that were bigger than they thought they were going to be.

Press Reviews

AV Club (USA)

Murphy is one hell of a frontman, and LCD Soundsystem is a deliriously exciting concert act. Full review.

Hollywood Reporter

LCD Soundsystem's die-hard fanbase will appreciate this concert documentary, but few others are likely to think it demands big-screen viewing. Full review.

New York Times

Graceful in its depiction of the performance, neither uncomfortably intimate nor shy. Full review.

Variety (USA)

Much like the band's self-conscious synth-pop itself, Shut Up is initially satiric but ultimately disarming in its emotional resonance. Full review.
