A documentary on a former Miss Wyoming who is charged with abducting and imprisoning a young Mormon Missionary. Directed by documentary legend Errol Morris (The Fog of War, The Thin Blue Line). More

"Joyce McKinney, the subject of Morris’ latest (and most riotous) inquiry into the subjective nature of truth, is a former Miss Wyoming whose exploits launched a thousand tabloid headlines in England during the 70s. Artfully structuring his account so that the telling of it is as much (maybe more) of a joyride as the crazy tale itself, Morris intercuts her version with several others, most vitally the recollections of two fiendishly funny tabloid hacks. As she tells it now, McKinney crossed the Atlantic in 1977 in order to rescue the man she loved from a religious cult. As the police saw it, however, she kidnapped a young Mormon missionary, kept him locked in a cottage in Devon for several days, manacled him to a bed and forcibly violated his vow of celibacy." Its sad tht Kirk Anderson isnt seen as a victim - If genders had been reversed, McKinney would've been sentenced 2 prison 4 a long time

While Errol Morris’s documentary subject may be the rather ‘devoted’ Joyce McKinney, Tabloid is really about the power of the British compacts to take a story and its main protagonists and run with them. As two former rival hacks reminisce during the film, The Daily Express championed McKinney's crusade (even to the point of having her pose in a nun's habit) while The Daily Mirror set out to discredit her and their rival by digging up as much dirt as they could (with some of the photos more suitable for The Sun’s Page 3 than anywhere else). More

Yes, if the recent News of the World saga has only just made you aware of the rivalry amongst Britain's smaller-sized newspapers, then this will certainly enlighten you of the lengths the ‘red tops’ (so known because of their masthead colour) go to outsell their competitors.

Mixing archival footage with new interviews with many of the key players (who virtually all have different accounts of how it all went down) and backed by an urgent and insistent score, Tabloid is this year’s Man on Wire, a twisty-turny crowd-pleasing documentary about a barely believable real-life event that many of us never knew about and others have completely forgotten. I love them like this

I wasn't sure what to think about Tabloid when I went in, but a friend had assured me it was going to be good. A "must see" he said.

And he was right.

Tabloid tells the story of a former beauty queen who is set to marry the man of her dreams. But, he up and leaves America to go to England. Surely not of his own free will? It must be that Mormon "cult" he belongs to. There's only one thing to do, kidnap him and bring him back to reality...

Listening to this crazy woman talk about her thoughts and ideas as if they were rational is engaging, and I love a documentary with a twist in it. I also loved the on-screen text, just to reinforce the points. ;)

All in all, it was indeed a must see, and a standout film of the festival for me. If you like a good story or a documentary film, this is one you need to watch.
