Winner of the Critics and Alfred Bauer awards (the latter for "opening new perspectives in film art") at Berlin Film Festival 2012, this romance is told in two parts shifting between contemporary Portugal and colonial Africa. More

"Aurora, an elderly Portuguese woman and her Cap Verdean housekeeper live next door to Pilar, who has made it her aim in life to do good. Not that she receives any gratitude for her efforts – and certainly not from the notoriously mistrustful Aurora, who prefers to spend her remaining years losing her meagre savings at the tables of Estoril casino. When the old lady dies, Pilar gets on the track of an old lover." (Berlin Film Festival) Hide

Wonderful, seductive, portuguese film shot in black and white - one of the best films of 2012.

Mysterious, enchanting, and altogether singular. Full review.

Guardian (UK)

Gentle, eccentric, possessed of a distinctive sort of innocence - and also charming and funny. Full review.

Oh yes. A new master is born. Full review.

Los Angeles Times

The audience is left to imagine much of the story, though it is clear it involves love, betrayal, guilt, regret and a recurring crocodile. Full review.

New York Times

An elegant composition of dreams, memories and suggestive images — but its artfulness seems like an alibi, an excuse for keeping the ugliness of history out of the picture. Full review.

NPR (USA)

Few films are this smart about subtly couching their allegorical aspirations within more straightforward narratives; fewer still are able to do so with such energetically inventive virtuoso style. Full review.

Variety (USA)

Unexpectedly shifts to something surprisingly enriching and poetic. Full review.
