A must for music lovers

One of my favourite films of the Film Festival. But, then again, I love Russian Orchestral music, including Tchaikovsky. Some might not like the racial stereotyping. If you get past that, you'll find a delightful farce.

Just Delightful

Saw this on a wet afternoon in Wellington and it was an absolute delight. Funny while very thought provoking with utterly fabulous music.

I think you missed the whole point of the movie. Where did your 25 years of watching went to?

Dross

I've been watching foreign cinema for 25 years and The Concert would have to be the most predictable, trite piece of mainstream garbage I've seen outside of the Hollywood machine.

It's awful to have a sense of a cinematic formula being churned out and that's exactly how The Concert feels. The concept for the film could have produced something special, but the small group I went along with all left the theatre in disappointed silence - The Concert is an embarrassment.

Chagallian Fantasy

This film reminded me of the surreal Window to Paris. In The Concert, the fake Bolshoi orchestra consists of virtuoso gypsies, stereotypical nationalities, idiosyncratic personalities and former members of the original genuine Bolshoi. There's a tragic history behind the Russian conductor and his sought after French violinist. The highlight is the Concert itself. Light comedy and farce with some sad searching moments.

The word "nice" will just have to suffice.

Twee yes, but a feelgood movie that you'll enjoy if 'Mr Holland's Opus' rocked your dinghy. Predictable, even cheesy at times. But played with relish and a twinkle in the eye. It touches on politics and the anti-semitism of 1980's Politburo politics - but lightly. Perhaps in the hands of a more strident and daring director this could have been so very much more but as it is? It is what it is - an uplifting feel-good tale about music and camaraderie with the orchestra as the metaphor for family rather than state. Beautiful score, solid acting and direction and a script no worse nor better than similar Hollywood fare. Sometimes, well - sometimes the word "nice" will just have to suffice.

Press Reviews

Empire (UK)

More sentimental, less spiky than Mihaileanu's stock-in-trade, Le Concert is an enjoyable take on the underdogs genre. And Laurent and the music are sublime. Full review.

New York Times

The harder this desperately obsequious circus of a movie tries to entertain, the more it falls short. Full review.

Variety (USA)

The story regurgitates the usual trappings of underdog tales, milking stereotypes as well as tear ducts. Full review.
