Roman-era action - not so much with the historical accuracy over here

Etherhurst B-Grader (?)

The first part of this movie was pretty cool - young Legionary officer with a chip on his shoulder turns up to a remote Roman fort in Britain and proves to be a bad-ass who wants to avenge his father's dishonour. So far so good - some cool fight sequences and decent acting.

However, slowly but surely this descends into silliness - with lost mythical Roman soldiers appearing like Tolkien-esque ghost warriors and supposedly Pictish (early Scots) tribal people more closely resembling... well I don't know what... American Indian shamans? It also includes the most ridiculous bonfire ritual ever.

Still - there are sword-fights, dismemberments, and the lead performances are all pretty reasonable. The dialogue's not embarrassing, but nor is it especially interesting; and the storyline wavers frequently between engrossing at times and silly at others.

All in all - it does what it says on the tin: a 'swords-and-sandals' action movie with nice cinematics. Just don't take it too seriously.
