In an era of pointless remakes, 2010’s Clash of the Titans had a bit of potential, using CGI for its mythological creatures in place of the Ray Harryhausen stop-motion animation - now too dated for mainstream audiences - that made the early-‘80s original so spectacular. But then it turned out to be not a very good film and was also poorly post-converted to 3D with some glaring glitches. Despite this, it still took close to $500 million worldwide, so here’s an inevitable sequel and luckily one that manages to improve on the first film. Because, as the floating embers that constantly hover in front of the screen remind us, this time the 3D works properly. More

Other than that, it’s mostly business as usual with wooden ol’ Sam Worthington returning as Perseus (this time dropping all pretence at speaking with anything other than an Australian accent). An unwelcome addition, and one made more galling by his ocker tones, is a newfound need to inject quips and wisecracks into the dialogue, modern banter at odds with the seriousness of both the film’s apocalyptic scenario and source material. Isn’t a flying horse enough light relief?

Let’s get real, this has no aspirations to be anything other than a blockbuster and on that front it fares okay, better than its predecessor on a couple of fronts - its mythical monsters and a spectacular sequence inside the moving underground dungeon of Tartarus. The story’s high stakes never connect emotionally, though, making for a tensionless and excitement-free version of The Lord of the Rings, albeit mercifully shorter. Hide

Wrath of the reviewer (the sequel)

adamatdramatrain Flicks Superstar (?)

What do you do if the first movie was so atrocious that it made a handsome profit? Why, make another of course. So it is that 'Titans' joins the likes of 'Underworld,' 'Resident Evil' and 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' with a completely pointless sequel. Sam Worthington (as Perseus) once more imitates a solid block of timber, whilst Liam Neeson (Zeus) and Ralph Fiennes (Hades) laugh maniacally all the way to the bank. Even in 3D 2010's 'Clash of the Titans' was barely two-dimensional and the sequel does not disappoint. Barrow-loads of cash have been poured into the art design and special effects but, like 'John Carter' and 'Transformers' (2 and 3), the script seems to have been written by a bunch of twelve-year-old boys high on M&M's soaked in Red Bull...

As with his former picture, 'Battle: Yawn Angeles,' director Jonathan Liebesman does not fail to disappoint and the whole enterprise is so garish, tawdry, unnecessary and poorly executed (in terms of unimportant aspects such as script, character and narrative at least), that it resembles an annoying hangover in 3D, 2D or anyone dimension... And, just like a hangover, it left me wondering why, after the last time, did I put myself through the experience a second time? Yeah, I know. I'm a glutton for punishment. Must be... I've seen every movie Nicolas Cage has ever been in.

1 star - for the visuals (yawn) - but you still require characters and at least some plot - that's what sustained the great myths after all...

If even a tenth of the care and attention lavished on the production design and action sequences had been afforded the script, this could have been an adventure of legendary proportions. As it is, this fizzles whenever anyone opens their mouths. Full review.
