Kinds of Kindness trailer and release date – NZ

Cinema’s premiere absolute freakshow Yorgos Lanthimos (and that is, we assure you, the highest possible compliment) returns after the triumph and controversy of Poor Things for another… well, another. And he’s bringing a lot of familiar faces with him.

When is Kinds of Kindness being released in New Zealand?

Kinds of Kindness hits New Zealand cinemas on July 11.

What is Kinds of Kindness about?

Well, that’s quite a question, and given the lack of concrete details we must, to the consternation of our editor, defer to the official synopsis issued by Searchlight Pictures:

Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable with segments following a man without choice who tries to take control of his life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing at sea has returned and seems to be a different person; and a woman who is determined to find a specific someone destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

Now, at no points do the words “horny” and “weird” occur in that description, but let’s be real here: it’ll almost certainly be both.

The cast of Kinds of Kindness

To be clear, we have absolutely no idea who’s playing what, but how’s this for a cast? Emma Stone (Poor Things), Jesse Plemons (seemingly everything, but lately Killers of the Flower Moon and Civil War), Willem Dafoe (c’mon, you know him), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Hong Chau (Downsizing, The Whale), Joe Alwyn (Mary, Queen of Scots), Mamoudou Athie (Elemental, Jurassic World: Dominion), and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes).

Why we’re excited about Kinds of Kindness

Plainly, Lanthimos is always worth a look. And while anthology films have often struggled at the box office (anyone else remember Four Rooms? No? Just us, then?) the Greek Freak has always had fun playing with the formal possibilities of cinema. So, we’re in.
