The Vista Foundation 48HOURS returns for 2024. Read on for all the key dates and special discounts available.

After a year off, the Vista Foundation 48HOURS filmmaking challenge returns for 2024. This is the country’s biggest filmmaking competition, tasking budding filmmakers of all ages and abilities across the motu to write, shoot, and cut a film over the course of a weekend.

This year’s shoot weekend is 17 – 19 May. You can now register your team for the discounted earlybird price valid from 18 March to 17 April (normal registration kicks in from 18 April to 15 May). School teams get a special 2 for 1 deal this year (read more on that), tertiary students score 50% off the registration fee (details here), and there are 10 free entries up for grabs for community groups and charities (apply here).

The Grand Finals will take place 27 July and, for the first time ever, will be screened at the mighty Embassy in Wellington.

Keen beans can also take part in the special OPPO48 Challenge on 20 April. It’s free to enter, with teams tasked with making a ONE MINUTE film with an OPPO phone in just FIVE HOURS. The winning team will scoop up $5000 + the honour of having their film screen at the Grand Finals. Find out more details, including how you could borrow an OPPO phone, here.

Once you’ve registered, why not pop on over to the 48HOURS screening room and watch the finalists from the previous competition? Or perhaps catch some recent feature films from 48HOURS veterans like Thomas Sainsbury’s Loop Track, Gerard Johnstone’s M3GAN, and Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins?
