10 Things I Hate About You

High-school romantic comedy update of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Popular sophomore Bianca's (Larisa Oleynik) dad has forbidden her from dating until her hostile, boy-hating older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) gets a boyfriend of her own. Co-stars Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Allison Janney.

In a bid to take hottie Bianca to the prom, vacuous jock Joey (Andrew Keegan) pays the school rebel Patrick Verona (Ledger) to date Kat. Meanwhile new kid Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) also falls for Bianca, posing as a French tutor to spend time with her. Despite turning him down a number of times, Kat discovers there is more to bad boy Patrick than she first thought - that is until she discovers his deal with Joey.

This '90s teen hit made a star of then-unknown Australian actor Ledger, introducing him to an American audience that embraced their new golden boy with both arms. 10 Things also launched the film career of Gordon-Levitt, who until then was better known for his role on hammy TV sitcom Third Rock From the Sun.

At times the pic doesn't even seem certain which decade it's set in; the squeaky-clean high school environs often feel more '80s than '90s.

Re-establishing the respectability of teen comedy... lovably lightweight without being clichéd or patronising.

Stiles grows into her character and Ledger is effortlessly charming.

Stiles, whose slightly rushed, impatient delivery sometimes recalls the young Jane Fonda, lets enough sweetness seep into her portrayal to lend even the nastiest retort a hint of forgiveness.

The high school romance genre has become so popular that it's running out of new ideas and has taken to recycling classic literature.

Although already off to a winner thanks to its derivation from the finest source material around, this also succeeds in its modernisation, providing teen comedy that is somehow tried and true, but fresh all at the same time.
