A Place in the Sun

Filmmaking giant George Stevens' Oscar-winning romantic melodrama, the story of a working-class man (Montgomery Clift) who is entangled with two women; one who works in his wealthy uncle's factory (Shelley Winters) and the other a beautiful socialite (Elizabeth Taylor).

Theodore Dreiser's 1925 novel on which this is based has been adapted numerous times, including stage productions in 1926 and 1929, and a 1931 film version directed by Josef von Sternberg. There is also an intriguing failed attempt in the 1920s to get it on the big screen, which involved a screenplay by Sergei Eisenstein and Charlie Chaplin as producer.

Winner of 6 Academy Awards in 1952, including Best Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and Costume; Best Picture (Drama), Golden Globes 1952

Most of Dreiser's acrid social satire is smoothed away by Stevens' grandiose style, and it's all too stately to be affecting.

One of the great studio dramas of the period and one of this column's favourite films, with haunting performances from Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.
