Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey

(2011)

Documentary about Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind Seasame Street's Elmo. Winner of the Special Jury Prize (Documentary) at Sundance 2011.... More

"Kevin is a big, tough-looking dude who is the heart, soul, and high-pitched voice behind the world’s most beloved baby monster. The 50-year-old puppeteer’s sense of humor and gentleness is immediately obvious (Elmo just helps channel it), and documentarian Constance Marks goes deep in her film on his inspiring story from childhood Sesame Street fan to one of its biggest talents… ‘Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?’ Through hard work, talent, and imagination, the little boy who dreamed of making people smile with his puppets found his way there, making a little-known character into a global phenomenon." I really enjoyed this documentary, which I saw at this year's NZ Film Festival. It was fascinating seeing how this kid who loved making puppets for himself, got to meet Frank Oz and Jim Henson and the rest was history. It was wonderful seeing all of the ways that Elmo is used to support kids who are disadvantaged. It was also lovely seeing how humble the main character was. Overall, a really interesting insight into a much loved Disney character.

There's so much joy crammed into the film that there's no time to notice the lack of depth.
