Beverly Hills Cop
Eddie Murphy - already famous, but on the cusp of international stardom with this role - is tough-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley in this hit '80s action comedy. Foley heads to posh, racist Beverly Hills in his beat-up Chevy Nova to investigate a friend's murder. Soon he realises he's stumbled onto something much more complicated. Judge Reinhold is bungling rookie Billy, who joins the fish-out-of-water caper to help Foley.

Reviews & comments

Variety
pressExpectations that Murphy's street brand of rebelliousness would devastate staid and glittery Beverly Hills are not entirely met in a film that grows increasingly dramatic.

The New York Times
pressMr. Murphy knows exactly what he's doing, and he wins at every turn.

Roger Ebert
pressMurphy looks like the latest victim of the Star Magic Syndrome, in which it is assumed that a movie will be a hit simply because it stars an enormously talented person.
