Charlotte's Web (2006)

Nickleodeon and Paramount Studios bring E.B. White’s children’s classic about friendship & loyalty to the silver screen – with the great Dakota Fanning and a whole lot of stars as the animals. Shot in Australia, ala Babe.

Fern (Fanning) sees that Wilbur the pig is a special animal as she raises him, the runt of the litter, into a terrific and radiant wee fella. When Wilbur moves into a new barn, he makes another friend in Charlotte the spider (Roberts). Their bond inspires the animals around them to come together as a family. When the word gets out that Wilbur's days are numbered (bound for the dinner table), a determined Charlotte helps hatch a plan to save Wilbur. A pig worth saving.

If you've never read it, this is a perfect introduction, and if you have, you'll be impressed with how effectively director Gary Winick and screenwriters Susannah Grant and Karey Kirkpatrick capture White's message about love and loyalty among all of God's creatures without ever getting syrupy. There's an edge to this exemplary family movie, just as there is in the story...

"Charlotte's Web," with its insistently "magical" theme music, an overbearing climax and a trough full of bad jokes, is merely adequate...

Yet if you don't expect the moon or any directorial distinction, the new adaptation of the 1952 classic works on its own terms while respecting the original. I liked it. I didn't love it the way I love the book, but the book ... well, that is some book...
