The teenage wasteland, 1976-style, of Dazed and Confused is smack-dab between The Brady Bunch and Children of the Damned, and it's a scary, if sometimes giddily amusing, place to visit.
Full reviewFree-flowing coming-of-age chronicle of the last day of school in 1976, following geek and cool-kid teens looking to get drunk, high and laid when that final bell rings. The follow up to 1991 indie sensation Slacker by director Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, Sunset and Midnight).
On the month of May, it becomes open season on junior high kids as high school students become hunters with paddle bats, welcoming the summer holiday in Texas. But what starts as an inevitable round of bullying for one junior turns into a life-defining night when an older teen takes him under his wing and introduces him to a world full of booze, love, youthful spirit and other intoxicating substances.
The film helped launch the careers of Oscar-winners Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey, as well as sci-fi action icon Milla Jovovich.

Full reviewHas an enjoyably playful spirit, one that amply compensates for its lack of structure.
Full reviewThis is a good film, but it would not cheer people up much at a high school reunion.
Full reviewA smart piece of filmmaking which suggests Linklater is already one of the more formidable talents of the 90s.
