Something you may not know: gnomes come to life when you're not looking. More than that, they can fall in love like lovesick Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and the enamoured Juliet (Emily Blunt). But this romance faces many obstacles including a tall garden fence and their respective, fueding families (red vs blue gnomes). Features a soundtrack of classic Elton John tunes.Hide

Flicks Review

It goes without saying that the tragic ending of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet just isn’t going to fly in an animated film for kids. And that’s part of the problem with the “Shakespeare” in Gnomeo and Juliet: it’s so willfully dumbed down (the feuding families are simply referred to as “Reds” and “Blues”) that there doesn’t seem to be much of a point for this adaptation beyond the groan-inducing pun of the title. It’s just a generically cutesy romance between two garden gnomes who come from families who hate each other, and spend most of the film cooking up ways to sabotage each other’s plans.... More

With its literary roots neutered, Shrek 2 director Kelly Asbury overcompensates with noisy 3D-ready hardware spectacle – there’s a running gag involving lawnmowers – which is a pity because there is a genuine sweetness in Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet’s (Emily Blunt) courtship that becomes lost underneath all the chases and property destruction (the film’s emphasis on the fragility of the characters’ ceramic bodies will likely unnerve younger audiences). The voice talent, primarily Brit, star-studded and quite recognisable (Michael Caine: check), do their spirited best, but while the sufficiently sunny palette and textured animation of the characters are easy on the retinas, they often lack the soul of clay-mators Nick Park or Adam Elliott’s work. The Elton John-heavy soundtrack will be hard work for those who aren’t fans of the artist.Hide

I actually really enjoyed this. It was a great movie to just sit down and blob out to. I would rate it highly if you are looking for a movie for all the family to watch. There was plenty of cuteness to keep the young ones happy, with enough comical references to amuse adults as well. Sure, this does end with a happy ending, unlike the original. I thought the conversation with the Shakespeare statue about this was quite funny. I'm glad I didn't pay movie prices to see it but as a cheap... More DVD, it was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.Hide

Gnomeo & Juliet should not be misjudged, its a classic movie released in 3D and has a great, funny storyline based on an old time story

  • Shame about the annoying plastic flamingo (this movie’s version of Madagascar’s King Julien) and a general tone of wisteria unelfily close to that of Luc Besson’s Arthur cartoons. Full Review
