Only Lovers Left Alive

Only Lovers Left Alive

Only Lovers Left Alive

Jim Jarmusch (Broken FlowersGhost Dog) received another Palme d’Or nomination at Cannes 2013 for this slowburning, darkly comic story of centuries-old vampires Adam and Eve, played by Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton. Adam is holed up in rundown Detroit, making droney guitar music, while Eve fills her nights with literature in Tangier. As she sets off to see Adam, Eve begins to realise he's spiralling into existential despair. Co-stars Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt and Anton Yelchin.

"Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier, an underground musician (Hiddleston), deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover (Swinton). Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister (Wasikowska). Can these wise but fragile outsiders continue to survive as the modern world collapses around them?" (Cannes Film Festival)

A sweet but slight love story about world-weary hipster bloodsuckers.

A loving, very funny valentine to undead pleasures, with Swinton and Hiddleston on top form.

Jarmusch has created a requiem for a way of looking at life that is being increasingly relegated to the shadows.

Slow-burn celebration of art, style and aimless conversation. Among Mr. Jarmusch’s most voluptuous movies but it is also thin and pale, and perhaps too afraid of daylight for its own good.

With its retro-chic connoisseurship and analogue era rock, this is a brilliant haute-hippy homage.

Slow in pace and fittingly cold to the touch. Jarmusch's anti-Twilight filters various themes and ideas, but they never threaten to become a cohesive plot or offer resolution.

An ode to hipsterism through the ages, a mainline shot of cool and a playful tribute to artistic fetishism.

Haunting and idiosyncratic, Jarmusch’s vampire marriage preaches to the converted, but he’s in fine voice nonetheless.

What would it be like to be an average everyday vampire in today's world that had lived through and inspired centuries of human invention, evolution and history... prepare to find out in this well pieced together visual masterpiece, spellbinding on screen performances a real treat and better than i expected and my vampire genre loving expectations were...

A photo of a moment of the life of two mate souls. The perfection of the vampire, the purity of love, the subtle delicateness and tenderness that only absolute confidence brings... Everything in this movie is about the unsaid and balance between our lovers. A movie I expected a lot from and which brought me far more.

I get tired of vampire movies with blood, gore and exploding passions. This movie is so refreshing with two very old and very wise vampires observing and becoming disturbingly affected by the decay they see around them. It is deeply romantic with regard to the strong bond shared between the two leads, and also the mystical link amongst their kin. I love...

I have four names for you: Jim Jarmusch, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, John Hurt ... those are enough reasons to go and see the film in my opinion. The soundtrack is amazing, the sets and costumes stunning, the acting impeccable and the commentary on mankind is simply spot on. If that's not enough, it is also quite funny ... I loved this film.

Funnier than expected, though oozing as much laconic cool as one could predict, Only Lovers Left Alive offers up a great take on hipster vampires for whom underground is more an attitude than somewhere to have a kip. Jarmusch's own music soundtracks much of the film, so it's no surprise that there's a bit of guitar porn and msuing on creativity along with...

Yes, the pace is slow and there is a lack of much in the way of action, so this movie is not for everyone. However, it's got a real vibe to it - great acting, great dialogue, beautifully shot, interesting locations etc. If you've got the attention span for it then, as with of of Jim Jarmusch's best work, it's like going on an interesting journey. Highly...

Beautifully, beautifully shot from start to finish - this is one of those films that was so visually stunning you actually found your eyes searching to the edge of the shot to take it all in. A bleak, yet darkly amusing look at what vampirism might 'really' be - a difficult addiction, or perhaps a depressingly long and arduous decline of the things you love...

I found the pace and nothing much happening dreary and mildly draining.

Only Lovers Left Alive was to me, a nice antidote to the hideous Twilight Saga which has plagued us all in one way or another, whether it was hearing the tweens of 2010 (I admit, I was one), talking about how Vampires were sparkly and filled with teen angst, or actually getting dragged along to one the atrocities and having to sit there, gagging down shame...

Its one of those films that tickles that strange and obscure bone of mine. It was a refreshingly different take on vampires after the recent outbreak of films, shows and books aimed at young adults. The actors were fantastic and the music sublime. It will be one of those films I will have in my collection to relax and enjoy on a bleak rainy day.
