Open Season

Woodland family film follows domesticated grizzly bear Moog (voiced by Martin Lawrence). Moog finds that there's more to life than being the star attraction of a mountain town nature show when fast-talking mule Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) offers him a crash course in living rough. It's with Elliot that Moog lands himself smack dab in the middle of the scary wilderness just before the start of hunting season. The first film from Sony Animation.

Though hardly the first animated film to tackle the plight of domesticated animals returning to the wild, "Open Season" is a witty, warmly crafted chestnut that reps a promising feature debut from Sony's upstart toon division...

Given that so many people have dismissed Ashton Kutcher as a superficial pretty boy, it seems a little ironic that his best work this week is two-dimensional: He makes a passable action hero in "The Guardian," but he's downright adorable in Open Season, a cheerful animated comedy built on his winningly loose voice performance...

The overfamiliar Open Season feels like just another CG 'toon in our 'toon-glutted times...

Fatally lacking laughs and a real sense of adventure, this is a sporadically funny and awkwardly animated curiosity...

Can you bear it? First Madagascar, then The Wild, and now Open Season, yet another CG cartoon about domesticated animals returning to nature...
