Reviews & comments
This movie made my day. Best bits were the bar scenes music, dancing, joking, cheering and friendships. This is a secondary role after the job as a checkout operator. Many of her friends turned up at the wedding reception. What a blast to see her introduce her partner to her sons and daughters and before the band began to play she acknowledged their...
Everyone deserves a second chance at redeeming them self
This film will make you laugh , want to dance , sing and maybe tear up a little bit. Meryl Streep is so talented , a real heart felt story about a mother who left her family to be a rock star, years later once her kids are grown up, she is asked to come home by her ex husband played by Kevin Kline as there daughter's husband has left her for another women....

Variety
pressThis is a shaggy, easily distractible film that consistently defies expectations to both charming and baffling effect.

Time Out
pressA movie that gives Streep her most emotionally blocked character in years, without caricature.

The New York Times
pressSeems like a squandered opportunity for this humane, curious and liberal-minded filmmaker to reflect on some uncomfortable realities. This isn't really rock 'n' roll. It's easy listening.

The Guardian
pressRicki and the Flash’s emotional intensity creeps up on you, and it’s all due to the performances. Everyone’s sympathetic, everyone’s got depth.

Stuff
pressA bit saccharine and corny it may be, but that's always been the essence of a decent pub rock ballad.

Rolling Stone
pressIt helps that Kevin Kline excels as Ricki's ex, and Mamie Gummer, Streep's real-life daughter, imbues the fictional version with rare grit and grace. Otherwise, too many wrong notes.

Hollywood Reporter
pressEven with its well-observed moments, the movie’s nonmusical interactions, whether reaching for laughs or poignancy, too often feel flat and forced.

Entertainment Weekly
pressRaises smart questions about why a mother’s musical ambitions are so much more selfish than, say, seven-time dad Mick Jagger’s.
