Even culture vultures will have their senses dulled by this ploddingly didactic two-hour lesson in the life and loves of master sculptor Rodin.
Full reviewA look at the life of French sculptor Auguste Rodin and his love Camille Claudel. Played in competition at the 2017 Cannes International Film Festival.
“At 40 years of age, Rodin at last receives his first public commission and creates his famous unfinished portal The Gates of Hell, a sculptural group work composed of many figures (some of these, such as Le Baiser and Le Penseur, will become his most famous pieces). It is at this time that he meets young Camille Claudel, his most talented student. She entices him with her youth, sensuality and artistic prowess. After ten years of passion, mutual admiration and complicity followed by a break up, Rodin relentlessly pursues his work. He has to cope with as much rejection as enthusiasm provoked by the sensuality of his sculptures.” (French Film Festival)

Full reviewJacques Doillon has directed a quite excruciatingly bad film about the sculptor Auguste Rodin and he needs to sit down and think about what he has done.
Full reviewThere is never any doubting Doillon's sincerity or artistry but his film is overly cerebral, unfolding in a series of encounters that fade to black and never build a dramatic momentum.
