Rust and Bone

Rust and Bone

French drama from acclaimed filmmaker Jacques Audiard (A Prophet), winner of Best Film at the London Film Festival and nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2012. Follows the relationship between a sea park orca trainer (Marion Cotillard), injured when a performance goes seriously awry, and a troubled single father (Matthias Schoenaerts) with a talent for street fighting - and bedding women.

Homeless, penniless and friendless, Ali (Schoenaerts) finds himself left in charge of his young son. He takes refuge in Antibes, France, with his sister Anna. There he meets Stephanie (Cotillard) who trains orca whales at a marine park. When a performance ends in a tragedy that leaves her physically and mentally shattered, Ali becomes an unlikely friend and lover, even as he goes about his own self-absorbed life.

Great Acting

Once again Marion Cotillard proves that she is without a doubt one of the best actresses working today. Rust and Bone is an emotionally powerful film that captures the emotional and physical pain of an injury and how it affects others and how others treat you. The film has a very good selection of music throughout and is also shot with a nice realistic...

Some good bits

Marion Cottilard is worth going along to this for. Damn she is fine even without the legs. I got dragged to this 'arty' film by a girl who likes to see depressing stuff apparently and if you are going to get dragged along to watch 'art' it mayas well have Marion in it. Kept me awake.

Raw and touching!

This movie is about our frailties as human beings and our strength of spirit to overcome them. It is also about finding love and acceptance during the most challenging transitions in life. Beautiful story. Excellent acting by everyone!

Made me Laugh, Cry, Love and Fear in a couple of short hours.

This movie was great, it showed two people brought together by fate both with a different set of problems in their lives that they did not expect and had to overcome. I found this film very inspiring and was able to feel the different points of views that each of the people faced. Brilliant directing by Jacques Audiard and I would recommend everyone to...

Behind the love story, there's a political one.

Behind the sugary coating of the romance at the heart of the story, there is a violent critic of society. A savage society in which disabled people have to stand their ground for acceptance; a wild society in which outsiders have to fight to survive and feed their children. Calling "RUST AND BONE" a romance is misleading. Yes there is a love story but it...

Interesting and a little dark at times

This was a really interesting movie although you need to be in the right mood to watch it. It was quite dark in places and I had some difficulty with watching some of the scenes where the little boy got hurt. Definitely worth seeing though. You very quickly get used to the subtitles, definitely not your typical Hollywood blockbuster type movie!

Dark yet compelling

This is not the most pleasant movie to watch. It's brutal, raw, and sometimes heart breaking. And at times, I felt an intense hatred towards the male lead. But it is all done quite beautifully, and it is a great story. Marion Cotillard is amazing and played her role so convincingly. And Matthias Schoenaerts does a great job of playing such a detestable...

an intense emotive drama high on testosterone ,the male lead a brutish yet compelling guy who for all his faults sees past the obvious , i was drawn in to the ugly and dysfunctional life by his blind compassion and brutal bloodthirsty desire to win , it was nice to see a female lead who didnt play the victim or get pregnant. i hardly noticed the subtitles...

A tender yet heavily de-romanticized love story between a boxer with broken hands and an orca trainer with missing legs, Rust and Bone serves as an impressive if somewhat overblown exercise in contrasts.

About much more than just PC themes and outlandish plotting. Cotillard’s performance is primed for awards, while Schoenaerts is a rough diamond.

Lyrical touches and the most moving use ever of Katy Perry's "Firework" almost cancel out a cheap-shot third-act tragedy, yet it's the actors that save the film from soaping itself into Euro-miserablist irrelevance.

Rust and Bone is a strong, emotionally replete experience, and also a tour de force of directorial button pushing. Mr. Audiard is a canny showman, adept at manipulating the audience's feelings and expectations with quick edits and well-chosen songs.

What could have been simply bizarre, sentimental or contrived here becomes an utterly absorbing love story.

Writer-director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet) probes the psyches of two people in crisis. His hypnotic film means to shake you, and does. Schoenaerts reveals unexpected layers in Ali. And Cotillard delivers a tour de force of unleashed emotions. She's astonishing.
