Sister Act

Whoopi Goldberg is a Reno singer who - after witnessing a mob murder - is stashed in protective custody in a San Francisco nunnery. There, masquerading as a lady of the cloth named Sister Mary Clarence, she shakes up the established order of the sisters' lives, particularly by bringing some soul to the nun's chorus.

Blessed with the from-on-high concept of Whoopi Goldberg bringing rock 'n' roll to a nuns' chorus, this infectious little throwaway - originally seen as a vehicle for Bette Midler - has a warm-hearted story and engaging premise.

A bizarre mix of actors goes some way towards bolstering this flyweight caper; but the last third degenerates into farce, with nuns and thugs playing cat-and-mouse in a Reno casino. A one-note movie.

Ardolino, whose credits include the heartwarming "Chances Are" and the dreadful "Three Men and a Little Lady," simply doesn't seem able to direct as if he believes his material is funny.
