Sparkle (2008)

Quaint, British romantic comedy about fast and loose Liverpudlian Sam (Evans) who, through a chance encounter with Vince (Hoskins), makes the move to London to crack the big time. To his horror, his mum (Manville) - as aspiring singer reduced to karaoke gigs – is also dizzy with the possibilities of the big city and insists on tagging along. Sam woos man-eating, PR sophisticate Sheila (Channing), and scores a job as her assistant. His ambitions are ambushed though, when he falls for Sheila's daughter Kate (Ryan).

Hunter and Hunsinger have given us a rom-com with a higher-than-average IQ, and the London it inhabits does look like a real, un-idealised place. If the British film industry wants and needs romantic comedies then it's good to have these two talents producing them. But I wonder if they should not develop in the deeper, darker, more complex directions suggested by their first film.

Ryan adds steely resolve to the clichéd, outward appearance of rom-com kookiness. Don't expect belly laughs, but a subtle British tang to the humour outshines those tinselly Hollywood moments.
