Swimming Pool

François Ozon's sensual psychological thriller stars Charlotte Rampling as a mystery writer offered the use of her publisher's vacation home. The repressed Sarah clashes with the house's other inhabitant, Julie (Ludivine Sagnier), the uninhibited daughter of the publisher. Julie's promiscuous sex life intrigues Sarah and starts to lead to the thawing of the emotional deep-freeze between the two. Nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2003.

Bracing sun-and-shade-dappled puzzler. It's a by-turns erotic, creepy and often very funny dip into deep, murky waters.

Mr. Ozon's first English-language film, is simultaneously a thoroughly mannered, mischievously artificial confection and an acute piece of psychological realism.

Stands as the filmmaker's most satisfying and contained work to date.
