Take Shelter

Michael Shannon (Broadwalk Empire) stars as a man plagued by apocalyptic visions in the psychological thriller. As he tries to work out if the world is about to end or if he's going crazy his family begin to fear for their safety.

"Contemporary anxieties about terrorism, disease, climate change and economic collapse as portents of the end of days are brilliantly channelled into Jeff Nichols’ acclaimed psychological thriller. Michael Shannon plays Curtis, a mine supervisor in a small Ohio town, happily married to Samantha (The Tree of Life’s Jessica Chastain) and father to a deaf six-year-old daughter. From the startling moment when we first encounter him it’s clear that he is driven by terrible visions of a coming storm and is fearing for his sanity."(Source: NZ International Film Festival 2011)

Curtis initially...

What it is, is a nice film which allows you to make a great connection with a character that's rarely achieved. As we watch Micheal progress through the film, there are certain scenes...

Atmospherically haunting

I found this to be a chilling and engrossing movie which consumes you with powerful performances and a narrative which feels very relevant in today's climate (both in terms of global warming and the financial crisis). The story revolves around Michael Shannon as a well respected family man who, following a series of nightmarish visions, believes the...
