Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby

Will Ferrell = brilliant man. From the makers of Anchorman, comes a similarly themed fable about rebel NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby (Ferrell). He's a champion and a national hero, alongside loyal racing partner Cal Naughton (John C. Reilly) - collectively known as 'Thunder and Lightning'. That is until a new teammate arrives, French F1 driver Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen) who challenges the duo for NASCAR supremacy.

Shaken by the pressure of new competition, Bobby has a a nasty crash and is out of the game. He quickly hits rock botttom: his wife leaves him for Cal, Jean become #1 and even his children turn against him, subscribing to Bobby’s sage advice that "if you’re not first, you’re last".

He also has a genius for sniffing out pop-cultural fixtures and embodying them in a way that goes beyond easy, obvious parody. Like Ron Burgundy, the hero of “Anchorman,” Ricky Bobby is at once a creature of pure, extravagant absurdity and a curiously vulnerable, sympathetic figure... As a cultural artifact, Talladega Nights is both completely phony and, therefore, utterly authentic. Or, to put it differently: this movie is the real thing. It's finger lickin' good. It's eatin' good in the neighborhood. It's the King of Beers. It's Wonder Bread...

Funny. Funnier. And more fun. And then the fun skids to a stop. You know how it goes: Plot gets in the way. Somebody decides it's time to get all warm and fuzzy. But until then, Talladega Nights is a chance for Will Ferrell to let it rip as an indelibly stupid NASCAR driver from North Carolina named Ricky Bobby...

Not just the funniest but the smartest comedy around by a mile... At its best, it scales the heights of cinematic Dadaism and affirms that Ferrell and McKay are among the few (along with Alexander Payne, David O. Russell and The 40 Year-Old Virgin director Judd Apatow, who has producer credit here) trying to breathe new life into the atrophied American screen comedy...

From its pitch-perfect title through just about every detail, this sendup of sports-triumph movies maintains the right parodic pitch, if not always the highest mph on the laugh speedometer...
