The 39 Steps

Alfred Hitchcock's classic thiller, named the fourth best British film of all time by the British Film Institute in 1999. Londoner Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) tries to help counter-espionage agent Annabella Smith (Lucie Mannheim), but when she is killed and he stands accused, Hannay goes on the run to save himself and stop a spy ring from stealing top secret information. Unfortunately, he is handcuffed to Pamela (Madeleine Carroll), a young woman who has been drawn into the case against her will and believes he is guilty.

The script is based on John Buchan's 1915 novel, the first in a series to feature the Hannay character. The story has been adapted for the screen four times, and even a comedy stage production.

It's melodrama and at times far-fetched and improbable, but the story twists and spins artfully from one high-powered sequence to another.

At 35, with more than a dozen features already under his belt, the director triumphed with this dazzling mixture of spycraft, banter, expository nonsense.
