The Connection (La French)

Crime thriller set in France's south coast in 1975, starring Academy Award-winner Jean Dujardin (The Artist) as a dangerous cop looking to take down an equally dangerous drug lord. Designed as a companion piece of sorts to William Friedkin's 1971 masterpiece The French Connection, eschewing crazy car chases on US streets to tell the tale of what went on in France at the same time as the events of the original.

The script is solid, the period recreation spectacular and the performances muscular, but The Connection suffers from a severe case of overfamiliarity.

The action is intermittent, but a steady tension keeps things interesting.

Grace notes in Dujardin's performance are an important booster for The Connection... [which] at worst unfolds like Scorsese-lite.

For all the charisma of its hero and villain, it falls down on its failure to resist cliché.
