The Image Book

The latest oddity from filmmaking legend Jean-Luc Godard, which became the first film ever to be awarded Cannes's Spéciale Palme d'Or.

What’s the film about? Hard to say. Even critics who've seen the film can’t tell you. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian admits: "It is bewildering. I’m not sure I understood more than a fraction and of course it can be dismissed as obscurantism and mannerism. But I found The Image Book rich, disturbing and strange."

As you watch "The Image Book," it conjures a totemic darkness that can't be shaken off.

Disjointed and direct, exhilarating and soporific, cerebral and squirrelly: The Image Book is lots of contradictory things at once.

It's not really "about" anything (that's soooooo bourgeois! "About"? I mean, really!).

It has moments of unlikely beauty.

As with his previous idiosyncratic, often inscrutable late works, this will be seen only by a highly select audience of dedicated Godardians, and genuinely liked by just a fraction of those; one can essentially name them.
