The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Urban fantasy based on the first book in Cassandra Clare's series of young adult novels, set in contemporary New York City. When her mother (Lena Headey, Game of Thrones) is taken, ordinary teen Clary (Lily Collins, Mirror Mirror) discovers a hidden world and that she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters – a secret cadre of half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons.

With the aid of her best friend Simon (Robert Sheehan, Misfits) and the elusive demon-slaying Jace (Twilight’s Jamie Campbell Bower) to guide her, Clary must unlock the memories her mother hid deep inside her. But with the deadly threat of demons, warlocks, werewolves and vampires ever-present, Clary is forced to hone her own repressed skills as a Shadowhunter.

In the aftermath of the dominant Twilight and Harry Potter sagas,The Mortal Instruments makes its move to take the YA cinema audience – a demographic that eluded Beautiful Creatures and Stephenie Meyer’s own The Host. But while City of Bones hammers down a confident start, it soon applies that mallet to its own head, beating itself down to a narrative mush of illogic and loose plot threads.

City of Boredom

City of Bones comes as a stella glow in the wake of the Tweenlight Express...This is what teenagers aged 12 and lonely 30 something's may want to hear but unfortunately, the rest of the world is unencumbered by these dilutions. I tried to be open-minded and saw this despite my gut feelings and what do you know. Aside from the occasional mass fight scene,...

Enigmatic

Pretty enjoyable movie to take your friend or partner to and have a good discussion about later. Easy to get lost and drawn in to the world created. Recommend you just give in to the surrealism and enjoy. Good action scenes, plenty of enigmatic sorcery and spell casting to keep you enthralled to the end, good watch on the big screen!

If you're in the right mood. . .

After all the tepid reviews, I was curious to see for myself. Is it really that lame? Well, no. It's actually quite decent. Laden with C.G.I and dynamic action sequences to carry you over the extensive dialogue, Mortal Instruments delivers solid entertainment. Wether that's enough to get the next installment made or not, remains to be seen. There's...

Worse than Twilight

Every romantic cliche that has ever been was in this movie. Some of the action sequences were quite good, but everything else was awful.

Movie could have lost 30 mins. Needed more action. Felt to much like another Twilight

Mundane Instruments

- Mortal Instruments : City of Bones - You have been chosen, to watch another 'Twilight' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' 'True Blood' 'Hunger Games' series. I liked the effects that drool of CGI ('Harry Potter' Dementor & 'Resident Evil' Licker) with hints of 'Host' & 'The DaVinci Code,Angels & Demons', which are again all good books. Steadily watchable with...

A ludicrous, borderline-nonsensical supernatural concoction with a slightly redeeming sense of its own silliness.

References to the Harry Potter and Twilight universes pose less of a problem than the increasingly messy action scenes and an overabundance of main characters.

Does an admirable job of streamlining the lumbering novel it’s adapting... But that still leaves behind an awful lot of tired, familiar elements portrayed in tired, familiar ways.

This desperate Twilight wannabe hits more than its own share of clunky notes.
