There's Something About Mary

The Farrelly brother's 1998 gross-out comedy hit, starring Cameron Diaz as the beautiful and sunny Mary - the object of manic desire for several Mr Wrongs including Ben Stiller and Matt Dillon.

The movie that gave us the penis-in-zipper scene (not to mention the Diaz-semen-fringe-quiff scene) follows Ted (Stiller, then best knowing for his Saturday Night Live performances) and his life-long crush on sex-bomb Mary. 13 years after last seeing her at high school, Ted's infatuation is still alive and well. He hires private investigator Healy (Dillon) to track her down. After finding her in Miami, Healy decides to feed Ted lies and go after Mary himself (claiming to be a Harvard-educated architect with a house in Nepal)... other would-be suitors/stalkers after Mary include Lee Evans, Chris Elliott ("Do you know what it feels like to have a whitehead on your eyeball?") and American Football star Brett Favre.

Stands as proof positive that a comedy can be far from perfect and still hit the bull's-eye if it delivers when it counts in its big scenes.

May be uneven and offensive, but it gets by on some splutteringly funny scenes and spunky performances from the leads.

The Farrellys display a crazy audacity that's worth admiring, and they take sure aim for the funny bone. ''There's Something About Mary'' may be many things, but dull and routine aren't among them.

Sensational, sicko fun.

An unalloyed exercise in bad taste, and contains five or six explosively funny sequences... I love it when a movie takes control, sweeps away my doubts and objections, and compels me to laugh. I'm having a physical reaction, not an intellectual one.
