Trumbo
Trumbo was not for me. It's well acted and competently made, but I don't like Oscar bait prestige pics like this. I usually find them forgettable and boring. Bryan Cranston, who just earned himself an Oscar nomination for his performance as American screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, is very good. But other than that, I can't recommend Trumbo. Grade: C+

Variety
pressMay be clumsy and overly simplistic at times, but it's an important reminder of how democracy can fail ... and the strength of character it takes to fight the system.

Time Out
pressTrumbo goes for a tone that’s more scrappy and inspirational, as this ousted ex-A-lister enlists his kids as couriers, builds a network of collaborators and wins two Academy Awards undercover.

The New York Times
pressPart biopic, part historical gloss, tells a great-man story with a patchwork of fact and fiction, mixing in the odd bit of newsreel with a great many dull, visually flat and poorly lighted dramatic scenes.

Rolling Stone
pressLuckily, Trumbo has a powerhouse Bryan Cranston to light a fire under the moldier clichés in John McNamara's script.

Los Angeles Times
pressTimely in its portrayal of a moment when political speech is dangerously charged, yet unabashedly old-fashioned in the sincerity of its storytelling.

Hollywood Reporter
pressWhat makes the movie work are the lively performances, both from the supporting cast and from Cranston.
