How to watch Heathers the Musical in New Zealand

Singing! Dancing! Dead kids! It’s got it all!

First it was a cult teen comedy. Then it was a largely derided streaming series that got yanked from the schedule, dumped and cancelled at something close to record speed. And at some point along the line, Heathers became a musical. This is a filmed production of that musical.

How to watch Heathers the Musical in New Zealand

Heathers the Musical is screening in New Zealand cinemas from September 5, 2025.

What is Heathers the Musical about?

Welcome to Westerberg High, where the entire student body is under the thrall of a trio of rich bitches all named Heather—hence the title. Angsty teen Veronica Sawyer is in their close orbit, but balks at their shallowness and casual cruelty. However, when brooding new kid J.D. hoves into view, their romance sparks Veronica’s spirit of rebellion. It also sparks a series of murders disguised as teen suicides, as J.D. really hates the high school social ziggurat. And now there are songs. The original film is a stone cold classic; hopefully this take captures at least some of its sardonic satire.

The cast of Heathers the Musical

Ailsa Davidson is our heroine Veronica Sawyer, Simon Gordon is bad boy Jason ‘J.D.’ Dean, Maddison Firth is Heather Chandler, Vivian Panka is Heather Duke, Teleri Hughes is Heather McNamara, and Mhairi Angus is the put-upon Martha Dunnstock.

Why we’re excited about Heathers the Musical

I’m somewhat baffled by this one. It was filmed in 2022 without an audience and released digitally that year, so it’s not like this is a fresh take on the material. But the stage production has been a huge international success, and cinema tickets remain way cheaper than live theatre tickets. I guess if you really love the musical, and perhaps don’t want to shell out for it, this is for you.
