How to watch The Hand that Rocks the Cradle in New Zealand
Horror comes home again with this remake of the ’90s banger.

Curtis Hanson’s 1992 thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle has such a solid and lurid premise that I’m genuinely surprised it’s taken over 30 years to get a remake. Times being what they are, what was once a reliable theatrical programmer—this original made a sweet $140m theatrically—is now going straight to streaming.

What is The Hand that Rocks the Cradle about?
A young couple with a newborn baby hire the most helpful nanny in the world, only to discover she’s a mad bunny boiler out to destroy their lives for some slight back in the day. Fatal Attraction, Single White Female, and this packed ’em in a few decades back, each pitting a scorned woman against the sacred bond of the American nuclear family. Certainly, it’s a sensational as a supermarket tabloid, but this sort of thing speaks to some deeply held societal anxieties. And it can make for very compelling and tense drama.
The cast of The Hand that Rocks the Cradle
Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Raúl Castillo are Miguel and Caitlyn Morales, our young couple, with newcomer Mileiah Vega as Emma Morales, their daughter; Maika Monroe is Polly Murphy, our psycho nanny; Martin Starr is Stewart; with Riki Lindhome and Shannon Cochran in support. This is just a hunch, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Riki Lindhome is playing a version of the BFF character that Julianne Moore played in the original film.

As long as this thing cleaves to its trashy genre roots, we should be in for a real fun time. “Fun” of course meaning creepy and intense.
