About Soccer Ashes

The Soccer Ashes match – in which a long lost (and forgotten) trophy will be contested between Australia and New Zealand's national football teams – will stream on Sky Sport in New Zealand. See below for the match day and start time.

About The Soccer Ashes

The Soccer Ashes were created in 1923 when New Zealand beat Australia in a test series (it remains the only time New Zealand have a won a series in Australia). Inspired by cricket's Ashes, at an event to mark the series, the two captains (Alec Gibb, Australia, and George Campbell, New Zealand) put the cigar ashes in a razor case used by a Kiwi soldier in WWI. That case was then set in a wooden casket. This trophy served as the prize for international tests between the countries for 30-odd years. From 1954, the trophy stopped been mentioned in press and its whereabouts was a mystery.

Nearly 100 years later, the stoggie-filled box has re-emerged. It was found in 2022 by the grandchild of a former Australian Soccer chairman in a garage clean-out during the COVID pandemic.
