Jake bonds with his cellmate, Caleb, and is forced to join a prison gang led by notorious inmate Romero, in order to gain his protection. The joyful spirit of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is distinguishable from other sitcoms in that it even though it delivers laughs in droves, it also provides a bit of a pep talk.

For those who still have a Parks & Recreation-size hole in their heart from the unfortunate cancellation of that ingenious comedy series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is about as worthy a successor as you’re likely to find these days.

Despite being a star vehicle for Samberg, Nine-Nine is truly an ensemble, and the pilot tells a story that skewers a cultural archetype popularized by two gone-solo SNLers — the glib, iconoclastic, all-about-me hero (Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop and Chevy Chase in Fletch).
