This second season may not be as ambitious as the first, but it is very satisfying as a bingeable work of suspense.

When people remember this show years down the road, they may even forget season two exists.

It's a handsomely mounted season of TV, sure - but it's lacking in distinction.

Monáe proved in Hidden Figures that she's not one to underestimate... But while things pick up pace in the show's final episodes, the series never quite reascends to its former glory.

Rather than advance the story significantly (or startlingly), it functions more as an afterthought or a predictable epilogue.

Having run through that story and now pivoting to expanding its universe, “Homecoming” is making clear that certain of its florid devices can’t replace the power of human connection, something that feels sorely lacking on a show whose mythology is expanding but whose characters feel, in the end, forgettable.

I'm sure there are viewers who will be happy to dispense with the aesthetic pretensions of the first season, but I loved the clear amusement Esmail was deriving from inventing a visual space for a talky podcast. This season is almost bizarrely no-frills.

What gives me pause, even as a longtime fan of both the Homecoming podcast and Season 1, is just how unfulfilling Season 2 ends up being.

It’s a solid but ultimately wasted opportunity not only to use that rowboat image, but also to revisit the world of Homecoming, and to give Janelle Monáe her first significant TV role.
