Fellow Travelers (November 6)

Two political staffers fall in love at the height of the 1950s queer panic. They’re reunited over the next three decades: the protest movement of the 1960s, the disco hedonism of the 1970s, and the tragic ramifications of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. Starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey, this era-traversing love story promises a peek into gay love throughout prejudiced times, plus some stirring performances from the friends and wives from whom the men hide their affair. Maybe have some tissues ready.

Savior Complex (November 9)

This infuriating docuseries sheds a light on the “white saviour” complex: what happens when well-meaning Westerners, often religious missionaries, overstep the bounds of helpfulness when they visit developing nations. The most fascinating thing about this show, though, is that the infamous subject shows up as a talking head. Renee Bach expresses guilt and her reasoning behind her aim to save lives in Uganda: why did she think she could heal the sick, with only God’s grace and a high school diploma to her name? The answer will leave your faith shaken.

Fargo: Season 5 (November 22)

A new season of this anthology series, endlessly revisiting the brilliance of the Coen Bros.’ film of the same name, is always a welcome surprise. This time around we’re in North Dakota circa 2019, with Juno Temple starring as a wanted housewife on the run from cop Jon Hamm. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays her mum; Joe Keery plays his son. So the cast is solid as usual, and the black comedy and brutal crime plot should follow suit. We can’t wait to hear some more modest midwestern monologues.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (November 3)

It’s wild to look back at the first, far simple film in this Keanuissance franchise and remember its more stripped-back, revenge-based beginnings. By now, our guy John is getting knocked from one glittering cosmopolitan to the next, always with a bounty on his head and some elaborate scheme from The High Table ruining any plans for retirement. While Chapter 4 might overstay its welcome with a tiring runtime, the climactic melee through Paris makes the whole ordeal well worth it: there’s a Sisyphean staircase fight that had me laughing, wincing, and cheering in the cinema.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (November 5)

Of course this bouncy, beautifully animated adaptation of the iconic Mario games made a megaton of money. I still wasn’t convinced by Chris Pratt as the voice behind the portly, Koopa-smashing plumber—why did he not even bother doing a slightly Italian accent?—but Jack Black was undeniably great as Bowser, now an incel balladeer. Whether you’re an old-school gamer or just a parent looking for a sparkly diversion for your kids, the new Mario movie offers enough entertainment and some nifty lil easter eggs for die-hards to notice.

The Pope’s Exorcist (November 24)

I saw this religious horror B-movie on the same day as Super Mario Bros., above: two entertaining films, both about as Italian as takeaway spag bol from a fish and chip shop. Russell Crowe gives his Father Gabriel Amorth a full-bodied, mama mia accent, however, in this scarefest based veeeery loosely on a real Vatican legend. If you can’t make it out the cinema to check out the new Exorcist movie this Halloween, watching Rusty battle demons from the comfort of your couch could be a good alternative.
