It is a very rare thing to have a band’s story told in this way direct from the band themselves. There are no guest talking heads, in fact like many things ‘Beastie’, I don’t think anyone’s ever tried something like this. After launching the book they did a short theatre tour in North America and enlisted long time friend and collaborator Spike Jonze to direct it and film it. It is unique in that they tell the story themselves on stage in front of an audience with humility and honesty, and a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour not seen in many music docos. The casual way in which the boys conversate with Spike over the sound system mid-show is charming and natural.

Spike Jonze crafts an entertaining and engrossing look at friendship, fame and creating "stupid fresh" music.

This film is a time capsule of the 1980s: an era that was crass and excessive in so many ways, but now seems weirdly exotic.

There are jokes, there are wild stories and there is incredible music — but above all there is heart.

“Beastie Boys Story” is less seamless, but more personal, than a classic documentary. Horovitz and Diamond are infectious company, and the film does a meticulous job of presenting the evolution of Adam Yauch, who was always on the edge of technology...

Beastie Boys Story isn't great, but it's quite good, and its power is in the distance between the young turks jumping around an '80s stage and closing shows with a giant inflatable penis and the lanky, fifty-something guys looking back at those days.

The Beastie Boys were genuine artists who transcended the limits of any specific musical genre and invented one of their own. “Beastie Boys Story” provides a charming and poignant explanation for how they pulled it off.

“Beastie Boys Story” becomes an ode to how creative passion and expression lives beyond its inception to impact people around the world and for generations to come.
