East Timor's first ever feature film, a romance set against the backdrop of Indonesia's invasion in the mid-1970s. Inspired by a true 16th century French story about Bertrande de Rols and her husband Martin Guerre, the drama is transposed to East Timor and follows the passionate Beatriz as she awaits the return of her missing husband.
Directed by Italian-born, Melbourne-based documentary producer Luigi Acquisto and Timorese theatre director Bety Reis. Australian thriller Balibo, shot in East Timor in 2008, is said to have provided local cast and crew with the experience and impetus to do this project.
The French story was the subject of The Return of Martin Guerre (1982) starring Gérard Depardieu, which also served as inspiration for Beatriz's War.
