As backstage movies go, this isn't as profound as Topsy Turvy but it's almost as much fun as Shakespeare in Love.

"Cyrano, My Love" attempts to give the "Shakespeare in Love" treatment to the timeless French play "Cyrano de Bergerac," with shamelessly derivative yet undeniably entertaining results.

Concealing its lack of substance beneath a carapace of froth and a cascade of famous characters (with Clémentine Célarié making a magnificent Sarah Bernhardt), "Cyrano, My Love" trips along happily enough.

Generally, Michalik manages to advance the various story strands persuasively, and with a lot of energy.

This isn't strictly how the most widely performed French play of all time came to be, but filmgoers should be happy to buy into this fast-paced fantasy.
