German Jewish comedy. "Our dubious hero, Jakob Zucker, is a born loser convinced he’s a winner. When his mother dies, making his inheritance conditional on reconciliation with his long-estranged brother, all his cunning is put to the test. A former East German television personality (that’s not a misprint, either), Jakob’s a proudly godless Communist; his brother Samuel an orthodox Jew. In order to inherit, Jakob and his family must go kosher overnight. The screwball complications mount when Samuel arrives with his entire family in tow for the week’s mourning, just as Jakob needs to slip away to play in a crucial, and crucially un-orthodox, pool tournament. The expected comedy of culture clash becomes much messier and funnier when it turns out that the Jewish half of the family is just as screwed-up and self-serving as the former Communists. In this film, ideological purity is for suckers – and these guys are Zuckers. But who’s going to watch out for the prying rabbi?" [World Cinema Showcase]
