Hippocrates

Chronicles the trials of a rookie doctor thrust into the mayhem of a French public hospital. Stars Vincente Lacoste (The French Kissers) and Reda Kateb (Far From Men).

"The film follows the confident and eager Benjamin on his rounds, treating patients and performing procedures. One night while on call, Benjamin has to deal with an alcoholic and homeless patient, Tsunami, who complains of chest pains. With the ECG machine broken, a diagnosis is made quickly – the patient’s cirrhosis is the cause, and the treatment will be pain-killers. Needless to say, Benjamin is wrong, and Tsunami is found dead the next morning.

"When Tsunami’s estranged wife appears demanding an explanation, the management’s decision to cover up the incident is questioned. Fellow Algerian intern Abdel (Kateb) puts his own career on the line to help Benjamin avoid the axe." (French Film Festival)

Filmmakers with significant life experience outside the creative arts are becoming ever rarer creatures, but France’s Thomas Lilti exploits his original career to the fullest in his fitfully engaging comedy-drama “Hippocrates.”

Alas, Benjamin isn't readily teachable or even very interesting ... which would be fine if his vacuity were intentional or useful and if the naturally charismatic Mr. Kateb didn't make you wonder why he wasn't the star.

Despite characterful ensemble work in the vein of Maïwenn's Polisse, scenes of spinal taps and form-filling outnumber life-or-death resuscitations, and its dramatic pulse tails off alarmingly.

Abdel's compassionate but controversial handling of a cancer-riven elderly woman provides the meatiest storytelling in this otherwise ho-hum workplace drama.

A scathing yet touching social dramedy that depicts the sketchy underside of a French public hospital.
