Reducing an immensely disturbing, politically byzantine tale to a series of cartoonish vignettes, this celeb-studded biopic squanders a gutsy performance by Amanda Seyfried.
Full reviewAmanda Seyfried (Les Misérables) is Linda Lovelace in this biopic of the '70s porn star who became a household name thanks to Deep Throat - the film that opened the middle-class' eyes to pornography. Co-stars Juno Temple, Sharon Stone and Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead).
In 1972, Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star in Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, she discovered the high-life when she fell for and married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor (Sarsgaard). She became an international sensation - less centerfold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with an impressive capacity for fellatio. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Lovelace became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative as the survivor of a darker story.

Full reviewSeyfried and Sarsgaard excel in a biopic that focuses on the hard times rather than the hardcore, and leaves you feeling that there's a lot more to say.
Full reviewDon't look to this skin-deep biopic to offer any insights beyond the head-slappingly superficial.
Full reviewThere's a lot in this story about victimization and agency that Mr. Epstein and Mr. Friedman never satisfactorily address.
Full reviewMay be a little contrived and unoriginal as drama, but it's a useful exercise in de-sentimentalisation.
Full reviewSmartly done account of the trials and tribulations of the first porn star.
Full reviewAn entertaining, provocative biopic with good performances and many strong scenes - but it still doesn't feel like the full Lovelace story.
Full reviewLovelace is available to stream in New Zealand now on Google Play and Apple TV and Academy On Demand.
