Paula
Carla Juri (Wetlands) is early twentieth-century German artist Paula Becker in this biopic from Christian Schwochow (Die Unsichtbare).
Painting is an unacceptable vocation for a woman in provincial Germany in the year 1900, but budding artist Paula Becker is determined to make her own rules. After marrying a local painter and spending five years having her spirit stifled by an imposed domestic role, Paula travels alone to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. There, she finally embarks on a journey of creative fulfilment and self-realisation.

Reviews & comments

Variety
pressA film that daubs an unexpected range of tones, from the tragically romantic to the jauntily comic, onto the canvas with free abandon.

Screen Daily
pressIt is a hugely demanding role with Paula present in virtually every scene and Carla Juri responds with a suitably big, emotional performance
