The pointed title of writer/director Nadav Lapid’s debut Policeman might suggest a straightforward cop movie, but it definitely isn’t one. This is an assured, willfully detached, almost ascetic socio-political drama that uses the role of the police to probe the topical issue of class divide in modern Israeli society.

Reps a strong debut from tyro helmer-writer Nadav Lapid, and will leave audiences debating the current social and philosophical issues it reflects.

Lapid's stewardship in the lead-up to that confrontation is remarkably assured, capturing an ever-present atmosphere of clique-ish camaraderie and pent-up fury and fanaticism through intense close-ups and vivid compositions of dynamic tension.

Boldly conceived and bracingly told.
