Prospect

A father and daughter are prospecting for gems on a moon in this sci-fi based on an earlier short by the filmmakers, Chris Caldwell and Zeek Earl.

"A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They've secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon's toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive. Forced to contend not only with the forest's other ruthless inhabitants, but with her own father's greed-addled judgment, the girl finds she must carve her own path to escape." The notion of a science fiction Western is nothing new—there’s a whole sci-fi subgenre of them often called (wait for it) Space Westerns. Star Trek notably explored the final frontier, Joss Whedon's Firefly and Serenity approached the concept with little subtlety, and 1981’s Sean Connery-starring Outland was basically High Noon in space, to name but a few examples (see also: Han Solo). Now on Netflix, last year’s indie sci-fi pic Prospect impressed with its initial trailer, which sold the film’s stunning production design—indebted to Alien, sure, but depicting its own blue-collar, lived-in universe.

"Prospect" has one thing that most indie sci-fi movies don't, and which any human desperately needs when traveling to unfamiliar worlds: atmosphere.

There's plenty of evident, if nascent talent.
